1. Google’s AI capability is under fire again

  • Google is facing controversy over its unreleased AI news tool that gathers and summarizes content from different sources, allowing publishers to circulate content faster.

  • The tool scrapes content from sources without their consent (which could be seen as plagiarism) and draws traffic away from these sources, raising ethical concerns.

  • These concerns are similar to those raised about the recently launched AI news reader (Particle), sparking worry about the shrinking news ecosystem.

  • This follows criticism over Google’s AI image tool, Gemini—which produces inaccurate, biased images—provoking doubt about their ability to develop AI tools responsibly.

2. Tumblr to sell data to OpenAI and Midjourney

    • Automattic (owner of Tumblr and WordPress) is about to sell its user data to OpenAI and Midjourney to help train their AI models (similar to Reddit’s $60M partnership).

    • However, an internal leak revealed that an initial training data scrape—containing all Tumblr’s posts between 2014 and 2023—included private content.

    • Although it’s unknown whether this data was sent to OpenAI and Midjourney, it’s raised concerns internally, with staff pulling personal content off their accounts.

    • Automatic does plan to introduce a feature (next week) that will allow users to opt out of training AI systems (Squarespace introduced a similar opt-out setting last year).

  • The collaboration is expected to produce the highest-performing XR headset in Q1 2025, with LG overseeing the hardware development, and Meta the software integration.

  • It could also bring LG’s smart home appliance operating system to the new headset, with Meta allowing LG users to use a voice chatbot to control appliances.

  • Rumors of a Meta-LG Quest Pro 2 collaboration emerged in September 2023, in a bid by Meta to combat the lackluster sales of their Meta Quest Pro, post-launch.

5. Diffusion transformers are the key behind OpenAI’s Sora — and they’re set to upend GenAI

OpenAI’s Sora, which can generate videos and interactive 3D environments on the fly, is a remarkable demonstration of the cutting edge in GenAI — a bona fide milestone.

But curiously, one of the innovations that led to it, an AI model architecture colloquially known as the diffusion transformer, arrived on the AI research scene years ago.

11. Ideogram AI Art Generator from former Google developers is officially out of beta!

This is the best model for generating pictures with text – the neural network understands promts well, and the results rarely contain word errors. They give you 25 generations per day for free – definitely enough to play around with fonts.

There is moderation, but it is insignificant – it doesn’t let through only very blatant requests.

16. Elon Musk sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over ‘betrayal’ of non-profit AI

Elon Musk has sued OpenAI, its co-founders, and affiliated entities, claiming they breached their original contractual agreements by pursuing profits instead of the nonprofit’s mission to develop AI for humanity. Musk, an early backer, claims they convinced him to fund OpenAI in 2015, but has refused to accept a stake in the for-profit arm.

17. OpenAI is getting involved in the terminator race.

The company has signed a cooperation contract with Figure, one of the main creators of AI robotics. These are the same robots that will be working in BMW factories very soon. Together with OpenAI, the startup will work on models for autonomous humanoids. However, so far they can’t do anything but make a cup of coffee.

Robots are already becoming more and more like living people, but whether they will be able to take on the multitasking of an engineer is a big question. Musk has already tried (https://www.forbes.ru/tehnologii/372975-problemy-tesla-na-proizvodstve-model-3-rekordnyy-travmatizm) to introduce robots into Tesla factories and reduce the record , but it didn’t work out: robots didn’t have enough intelligence and motor skills. But time is passing, generative models that learn quickly have appeared, large companies are already introducing robots to their production facilities (hello, Amazon), so industries are also rushing to reduce their costs at the expense of humanoids.

18. Cat got your tongue? How AI could is on cusp of breakthrough that’d allow people and ANIMALS to talk to each other in ’12 to 36 months’

ANIMALS to talk

It sounds like the plot of a new Disney movie, but experts predict AI will allow people to communicate with household pets and even wild animals.

Researchers around the world are using ‘digital bioacoustics’ – tiny, portable, digital recorders – to capture the sounds, tics and behaviors of animals that are too quiet or nuanced for humans to pick up on.

These databases will be used train artificial intelligence to decipher these miniature communications and translate them into something more comprehendible to us, almost like a ‘ChatGPT for animals’.
